COMMUNITY NEWS

  • SERVE, a Stafford County food pantry at 15 Upton Lane, is expanding its services as rising living costs force working families, seniors and military households to rely on fresh food and essentials. The organization uses an open shopping model and extended hours during emergencies to provide support.  Potomac Local News

CULTURE NEWS

  • A former Marine football team is honored with a permanent display at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico. The exhibit features the painting Semper Fi on the Field by Jason Breidenbach, explained by Ron Eckert.  Potomac Local News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia lawmakers plan to fix past wrongs by proposing to let nonresident Native students pay in-state tuition & to update laws to boost tribal rights and education. The proposals also include replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day and adding Native history materials online, with decisions expected by Feb. 17.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Sarah Lindberg of UMW said the new FAFSA is easier to use and urged families to file early for aid while stressing careful work on the college essay — which she compared to a topping that adds flavor to a college application.  Fredericksburg Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews are clearing secondary roads as another snowstorm approaches, while main roads remain clear in the area. Officials say efforts are ongoing to keep travel safe amid the changing weather.  The Free Lance–Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • During a winter storm from Jan. 25–29, hospitals in our region kept emergency rooms open despite shifts in patient volumes—staff adjusted operations to treat sicker cases. Health systems gradually returned to normal as travel conditions improved.  Potomac Local News
  • Virginia ARTfactory is hosting a free wellness workshop titled Sculpting Your Inner World on Valentine's Day from 1 to 4 p.m. in collaboration with UVA Health; participants will create earthenware clay sculptures for self-reflection, and advance registration is required due to limited seating.  Potomac Local News

  • The Nationals announced their 2026 coaching staff, headlined by manager Chris O’Neill, who brings college success to his new role. The team will begin the season on Friday, April 3 at home against Augusta at 6:35 p.m.  Fredericksburg Free Press
