COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Central Rappahannock River Habitat for Humanity is set to build several new homes in Ladysmith, and CEO (Jason Tickle) said volunteers, sponsors and supporters will be needed as work ramps up.  Fredericksburg Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UMW President Troy Paino and MWHC CEO Chris Newman discussed a plan to create a Fredericksburg medical school called Mary Washington College of Medicine during Bill Freehling's Biz Beat Banter this week — they are working with community leaders to gauge local support for the project.  Fredericksburg Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • This week, road work continues on Interstate 95 and several local routes in Caroline, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties. Projects include lane closures for pothole patching, guardrail installations and road widening, with some work scheduled to finish by summer and others by fall 2026.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • On Monday, Feb. 16, Congress boosted plans for a community to house homeless residents in Fredericksburg + officials said the funds will help move the development forward.  The Free Lance–Star
  • The Virginia Department of Forestry announced that outdoor burning is prohibited between midnight and 4 p.m. (within 300 feet of woods or dry grass) from Feb. 15 through April 30 as spring fire season begins; violators may face fines up to $500 and additional suppression costs.  Fredericksburg Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • A 72-inch sewer line collapse in Maryland released up to 300 million gallons of wastewater into the Potomac, yet local drinking water remains safe because Fredericksburg draws its supply from the Rappahannock River — officials confirmed treatment processes are fully operational.  Potomac Local News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cody Goode was chosen as the new head football coach at James Monroe High School when the Fredericksburg City School Board approved his hire on Feb. 9. The 31-year-old, who previously coached at King George & Spotsylvania, aims to revive the program’s tough play style.  Fredericksburg Free Press
