EDUCATION NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Youngkin looked at 917 bills from the General Assembly, vetoing 175, sending back changes on 159, and using eight vetoes on parts of the budget. He said he is ready to fight on big issues such as energy policy and immigration—moves that set the stage for more debates ahead of elections.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • GWRC has established the Rural Transportation Advisory Committee to improve transportation planning for Caroline and King George counties. The committee — composed of local VDOT members, GWRC staff and each county’s planning staff — will meet quarterly starting in the first quarter of FY26 to provide focused recommendations for rural projects.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Governor Glenn Youngkin signed laws to add fusion to clean energy, boost maternal health care and aid military tuition while he vetoed plans to raise the minimum wage, establish a prescription drug board and change voter registration rules. He said his vetoes would lower costs and support job growth—recording 201 vetoed bills in his final session—according to his statement.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Joseph Donald, a Marine veteran from Stafford whose Humvee was hit by a bomb in Afghanistan 17 years ago, will receive his long-awaited Purple Heart soon in a ceremony set for a few weeks from now — his award was approved after a fast 22-day review that cut short the usual wait.
