  • Business news in Fredericksburg reported that the popular brunch chain First Watch will open its 6,000-square-foot Cosner’s Corner location on April 14 with more than 180 seats and a recessed patio, and it is planning a branch in Central Park. Other area updates include a Richmond debut for Kickshaws Gluten-Free Bakery, a new early weekday opening for 25-30 Espresso in downtown, grand openings at Galvin’s Delicatessen and River’s End Speakeasy on April 2, a large assisted-living community under construction near Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center set to open this summer, and a $2.6 million home sale at Lake Anna that highlights the active real estate market.  Fredericksburg Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fredericksburg Film Festival returns for its second year from April 16 to 20 and will showcase international films from Cannes, Sundance & Tribeca along with local independent films by Virginia filmmakers. Screenings and events, including an opening night documentary with a Q&A and a Saturday block party with live music, will be held at various local venues as the town boosts its growing arts scene.  Potomac Local News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Mary Washington will hold its eighth annual Mary Wash Day starting at noon on April 2 and ending at noon on April 3 to celebrate giving back through matched donations. Justin Gerbereux ’97 and Allison Coleman Gerbereux ’96 will donate $10,000 to the unrestricted Fund for Mary Washington when 100 married alumni couples make gifts during the event — a challenge that builds on over $500,000 raised in past years.  University of Mary Washington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed plans to set up a taxed cannabis store system, change punishment for some marijuana crimes, and protect legal cannabis users in custody cases—moves that supporters say keep the illegal market alive. Lawmakers and advocates plan to try again next year—hoping to bring safe sales to Virginia.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Spotsylvania County leaders discussed new rules for data centers at a Tuesday public hearing—residents and officials shared concerns about balancing community impacts with attracting investment. The board deadlocked on requiring special-use permits and voted to have staff develop a clear definition and standards for future projects.  The Free Lance–Star
  • Nine new properties have been added to the Virginia Landmarks Register, including the Fall Hill Avenue Historic District in Fredericksburg — a sign of the city's growth after World War II — and eight other sites across the state. The Board of Historic Resources approved the additions — and they will forward details to the National Park Service for nomination — to protect historic places.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Fredericksburg city council agreed in principle during Tuesday's budget work session to advertise a 6-cent increase in the real estate tax from 76 cents per $100 of assessed value amid concerns of a possible localized depression affecting sales and meals tax revenue. The council will hold a joint work session with the city school board on April 1 and a public budget hearing on April 15 at 7:30 p.m.  Fredericksburg Free Press
