COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rappahannock Adult Activities holds its Spring Plant Sale today in Fredericksburg with more than 100 types of plants, and all proceeds benefit RAAI (a program supporting adults with developmental disabilities). The sale will also feature gardening workshops at its greenhouse (750 Kings Highway in Stafford County) on April 10, April 17 and April 28.  Fredericksburg Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UMW junior Ethan Sweeny, a geospatial analysis major, and Professor Steve Hanna have created both digital and print maps for the Stafford County African American Heritage Trail, a 23-stop tour that honors African American history in the county. The project, which also involved three recent UMW graduates and was recognized by a House Resolution from the Virginia General Assembly—underscoring its regional impact—is expected to become an ongoing resource for the community.  University of Mary Washington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Fredericksburg have been damaging tires and rims after cold weather worsened potholes on local roads. City and VDOT crews have been patching the roads quickly—residents are encouraged to report new potholes.  Potomac Local News
  • The Virginia Department of Transportation is asking locals to share feedback on a $4.1 million plan to install new concrete culverts on Route 608 over Catharpin Run in Spotsylvania. Residents can comment by submitting an online survey until April 17 or by visiting an open-house hearing Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brock Road Elementary School and should be aware that road closures will force a detour that adds about 12 minutes to travel time.  Fredericksburg Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • FredNats manager Billy McMillon said players have discussed the torpedo bat — which has a barrel six inches closer to the handle than a regular bat — after the Yankees set a home run record with it, and that it could soon appear in the minors. Some players still prefer traditional wood bats, but prospect Kevin Bazzell said he is open to trying the new design when it comes.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • The Fredericksburg Nationals will launch fireworks after Friday and some Saturday games at Virginia Credit Union Stadium. Games start at 7:05 p.m. with fireworks beginning about 15 minutes later on April 8 — April 11 — April 12 — April 25 — April 26 — May 9 — May 23 — May 24 — June 6 — June 27 — July 4 — July 5 — July 18 — July 19 — July 25 — August 15 — August 22 — September 5 — and September 6.  City of Fredericksburg
