COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Caledon State Park in King George will host the combined Bark in the Park and Easter Egg Hunt on April 12 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.—attendees can join a scavenger hunt, wagon rides, a photo with the Easter Bunny, food trucks, vendors, and dog activities including an agility course and working dog demonstrations. The free event charges a $5 parking fee, with funds supporting the upcoming B.A.R.K. Ranger Program.  Fredericksburg Free Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mary Washington Healthcare purchased a 20,568 square foot building at 1031 Care Way in Fredericksburg for $6.7 million last month from an affiliate of Gastroenterology Associates, per the deed transfer report. Other moves include a $2.175 million home sale in Milford, a First Watch opening on April 28 (two weeks later than planned) and centennial events at the Fredericksburg Country Club (marking its 100th anniversary).  Fredericksburg Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Four teens were charged in Spotsylvania for a shootout on Tuesday that left three people dead and several injured, including one suspect.  The Free Lance–Star
  • Three young men died and four others (including three minors) face charges for malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and unlawful assembly after a shooting tied to an illegal gun sale and robbery took place on April 8th near Fredericksburg; one teen injured will be arrested after hospital discharge, and schools operated on a two-hour delay on April 9th.  Potomac Local News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UMW senior Rylie Vann accepted the Scholar of the Year award while first-year student Daphne Bobb earned the Emerging Scholar of the Year honor at the Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference held April 4 and April 5 in Petersburg. Both awards include a $500 cash prize and recognized the students' outstanding leadership and academic achievements—marking the first time UMW swept the top honors.  University of Mary Washington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Southbound I-95's ramp from Exit 126 to Route 1 will be closed tonight from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday for paving as part of a VDOT project adding a second right-turn lane and other improvements scheduled to finish by August. Motorists are advised to use Exit 130 in Fredericksburg or Exit 118 in Spotsylvania County — if inclement weather cancels the closure, it will be rescheduled to 11 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Virginia's governor race has begun with Abigail Spanberger and Winsome Earle-Sears confirmed as their party nominees—early data show Spanberger leads in both polls and fundraising. The race is set to be highly competitive and historic, with potential national influence as both campaigns prepare for a record spending push.  Fredericksburg Free Press
