  • Caroline Street in downtown has been named Best Main Street in the South by Garden & Gun Magazine after a three-week community-driven voting campaign.  The Free Lance–Star

  • Fred Rankin, longtime CEO of MWHC (Mary Washington Healthcare), appears on this week's Biz Beat Banter podcast where he discusses his work at the hospital and shares his views on a healthy retirement plan; next week, Tree Fredericksburg founder Anne Little will be featured.  Fredericksburg Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Virginia farmers are facing a 40% jump in fertilizer prices and rising diesel costs as fuel supply issues from the Iran war affect shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Local growers worry that higher input prices might impact the 2027 planting season — potentially reducing yields.  Fredericksburg Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Spotsylvania County School Board voted 5-2 during its regular meeting on Monday to shorten Thanksgiving break to three days for the 2027-28 school year so families can observe diverse holidays. Residents have time to prepare for the new schedule.  Fredericksburg Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fredericksburg launched the free Eye on Water program that lets utility customers track water usage, set leak alerts, and view detailed consumption data online today. The service is available for all users.  The Free Lance–Star
  • Traffic patterns will be affected as alternating lane closures and temporary detours take place on I-95, Route 1 and several bridges in Fredericksburg and nearby counties — work is scheduled during off-peak hours with some projects finishing by summer 2026 or later.  Fredericksburg Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mental Health America of Fredericksburg will host its annual March for Mental Health walk on May 2 at Old Mill Park to support funding for free mental health services such as suicide prevention education and youth outreach (organizers say it shows community care).  Fredericksburg Free Press
