Good morning, Fredericksburg. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 16th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A summit hosted by Teach to Reach Teens met Monday evening to discuss teen violence after a mass shooting left three teenagers dead and three injured six days ago. Community leaders, teens, and officials shared ideas about social media influence and loss of support (including a gun giveback program) to address youth issues.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Diane Wheeler's family adopted Honey from Old Dominion Humane Society five years ago, and she was certified as a therapy dog to comfort people by visiting children, memory care residents and patients at a local infusion clinic. EDUCATION NEWS

  • At its April 11th meeting, the University of Mary Washington Board of Visitors voted to raise tuition by 2.5% for undergraduate and graduate students and increased mandatory fees by 4% for 2025-26 to cover rising expenses. Housing rates increased by 2% while dining rates stayed the same—on-campus costs for Virginia students will be $29,595 and for out-of-state students $43,101, with a one-time fee for new students raised by $50.  University of Mary Washington
  • Federal officials at the U.S. Department of Education are seeking feedback on changes that may alter Public Service Loan Forgiveness and income-based repayment programs, prompting concerns from Virginia lawmakers and education advocates about the potential harm to students in need. The agency will hold an in-person meeting on April 29 and a virtual hearing on May 1 — public comments must be submitted by May 5 — as stakeholders warn the changes could create a bureaucratic mess for schools and students.  Fredericksburg Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, American Rivers released a report that ranks the Rappahannock River as No. 6 on its Most Endangered Rivers list because unchecked development (rapid industry growth and dropping groundwater levels) is hurting the main water source for Fredericksburg.
