  • UMW senior Maha Montaz began making jewelry during the pandemic—she turned her hobby into a business venture by selling handmade pieces at campus events and local shops. CRIME NEWS

  • Stafford County authorities investigated a suspected pesticide poisoning at Rock Hill Honeybee Farms (45 Pinto Lane) on April 14 when over 50 bee colonies were found dead in what the owner said was likely vandalism, and the investigation remains active (with a $5K reward offered for tips).  Potomac Local News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, the Spotsylvania County School Board meeting nearly turned chaotic—heated arguments over a personnel hiring package and public comments disrupted nearly half a four-hour session. Despite the disorder, the board approved the measure by a vote of five to two and the superintendent addressed recent incidents to improve school safety.  The Free Lance–Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fredericksburg City Council discussed the FY26 budget Tuesday after a memo proposed slowing hiring to lower spending from $12 million to about $6 million, a 6-cent per $100 tax increase and shifts in funds to programs like Head Start, local homelessness services and Main Street. The public hearing will reopen on April 22 before budget votes in May—councilors aim to balance spending amid uncertain economic conditions.  Fredericksburg Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources reported that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 was found in wild birds, including in Fredericksburg, and advised residents to avoid contact with sick or dead birds. The agency asked anyone who finds several dead birds to call 855+571+9003 with proper safety gear.  City of Fredericksburg
  • Congress is considering cuts to Medicaid, which funds daily care for over 1.8 million Virginians including 125,000 children and many adults with developmental disabilities to help with tasks like nursing and medication management. The changes may force lawmakers to raise taxes or reduce services—leaving many neighbors with fewer supports.  Fredericksburg Free Press
