  • The Germanna Educational Foundation nominated Mary Washington Healthcare for the Award for Leadership in Philanthropy in recognition of its support for Germanna Community College—while the Culpeper Garden Club will hold a flower show on May 7 and Caroline High School culinary students earned state medals at a recent competition.   • Microporous will soon announce its Child Care Initiative — a program that offers grants to businesses and nonprofits to expand child care access and improve classroom safety and staff training in Southern Virginia. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • VDOT said starting Tuesday evening that northbound and southbound Route 1 lanes near the Route 606 intersection will shift right—making room for crews working on median construction—while law enforcement directs traffic until 5 a.m. Wednesday. The change is part of plans to widen Mudd Tavern Road and build a new secondary road that will improve local travel.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • NOAA fired 650 workers since Feb. 27 due to budget cuts, reducing the number of daily weather balloon launches — and leaving many Virginia meteorologists and farmers worried about gaps in weather data.
