Good morning, Fredericksburg. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 24th of April.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A four-building industrial portfolio in Spotsylvania County closed for $38 million, and downtown Fredericksburg now has paid public parking at 700 William St. Local businesses are set to expand with a co-working space opening with a grand opening on May 16, a First Watch location opening on May 5, and plans to convert the former Visitor Center into a restaurant and apartments — additional events include a mini-conference by the University of Mary Washington and a new office by Rinehart Bryant scheduled for mid-May.  Fredericksburg Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Washington Heritage Museums will host a free celebration on Sunday, May 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Mary Washington Monument in downtown Fredericksburg — where speakers including Barbara A. Perry, Ginnie Storage and Mayor Kerry Devine will mark improvements made through a $1.6 million preservation campaign — while a vintage car procession and Marine Corps Band performance kick off the festivities.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Fredericksburg resident and museum manager Karen Stone is researching the April 23 disaster when the Black Diamond collided with a Union transport and 87 soldiers drowned in the Potomac — she is gathering letters, diaries, and firsthand accounts to piece together each victim's name. She will release her book this weekend and present her findings on May 3 at the Fredericksburg Branch of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library — efforts that renew public interest in this long-forgotten Civil War tragedy.  The Free Lance–Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fredericksburg City Council tentatively approved a 4-cent real estate tax increase on first read. The rate will rise from 76-cents to 80-cents per $100 of assessed value and will take effect July 1.  The Free Lance–Star
  • The Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors tabled a vote on a rezoning request for a 99-home subdivision on 58.5 acres near Smith Station Road after residents raised concerns about heavy traffic and safety. The applicant offered nearly $1.2 million in cash and road improvements — measures aimed at easing congestion — while local officials and neighbors remain wary of the project's impact.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Fredericksburg City Council approved a conservative budget in a Tuesday night meeting that sets a real estate tax rate of 80 cents per $100—a four-cent increase from last year—and raises water and sewer rates by 8% and 6% effective July. The council also allocated $37.2 million for school funding, scheduled a May 13 public hearing on planning and zoning fees with the budget set for adoption on May 27, and provided 14 months of funding for a community outreach position that could be filled as early as May 1.  Fredericksburg Free Press
