  • This weekend brings diverse local events with a three-day art exhibit in Annaburg — at 9201 Maple Street — that opens today with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., a pet-friendly 5K run on Saturday at 9 a.m. in Dean Park, and the Earth Day Festival on Saturday at Old Mill Park featuring eco-friendly activities. A free global concert takes place on Sunday at James Monroe High School Auditorium — doors open at 2:30 p.m. — and features music from around the world.  Potomac Local News
  • The parking lot next to the old Visitors’ Center is now privately owned and parking is restricted—unclear signage has led to some cars being towed. Anita Crossfield and local visitors say the new owners must update the signs to prevent more towing incidents.  Potomac Local News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Karen Jonas will perform a solo show at the Sunken Well in Fredericksburg tomorrow in support of her new album The Rise and Fall of American Kitsch—an album that explores consumerism and environmental concerns. She said she loves playing at the venue and looks forward to sharing her art with local fans.  Potomac Local News
  • Fred Franklin, a longtime theater teacher, opened his Shakespeare Garden at his Cottage Casa on Wednesday—featuring raised flower beds with Shakespeare quotes and a wooden pavilion—designed as a free, private art space in Fredericksburg. Under hospice care after an emergency appendectomy last year, Franklin built the legacy project after a 38-year teaching career.  The Free Lance–Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Representatives from Allan Myers visited Caroline High School and selected three carpentry students for internships that will begin after graduation—linking classroom skills to future work opportunities. Sheehy Ford donated a 2023 Ford Transit cargo van and a VCMII diagnostic tool to the automotive program and will host the vehicle reveal on May 1 at noon—encouraging local officials to participate.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Andy Wolfenbarger, a longtime educator and parent, has announced his run for the Ward 1 seat on the Fredericksburg City School Board this fall—replacing Matt Rowe, who is running for City Council.   • The University of Mary Washington launched Career Academy by Coursera to give free online courses and professional certificates to students, faculty, and staff to help build career skills.
