  • Stafford residents Sue and Mark Baker donated $5,525 to the Stafford County Animal Shelter last month in memory of their daughter, Amy—who loved animals. The contribution supports the shelter’s ongoing care for local pets.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Caroline Street in historic downtown Fredericksburg was named Best Main Street in the South by Garden & Guns after winning a regional public-voting contest.  The Free Lance–Star

  • Little Fish Swimming opened its new area location in the New Post area of Spotsylvania County this week. The business aims to attract more local customers with a fresh, modern space.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Local investors bought Puritan Cleaners on April 27 (keeping its community roots) as VA250 updates and Tribal Nations news set the stage for the upcoming Big Dipper Innovation Summit.  The Free Lance–Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • Archaeologists resume the summer excavation today at Ferry Farm at George Washington’s boyhood home where last year’s dig uncovered intact colonial artifacts. Dave Muraca & Allison Burgess aim to uncover new clues linked to Augustine Washington.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Summer archaeology resumed at Ferry Farm in Stafford this morning when University of South Florida students joined The George Washington Foundation to excavate a colonial kitchen site on the grounds of George Washington’s boyhood home.  Fredericksburg Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rappahannock Electric Cooperative announced that power cost adjustments will raise bills (about $9.81 per 1,000 kWh) starting May 1 and provide programs to help members manage higher costs.  The Free Lance–Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents can comment on a Route 1 project to add a shared-use path, sidewalk, signals and a Hazel Run pedestrian bridge; an in-person hearing is held May 5 from 5 p.m. + 7 p.m. at Lafayette Elementary School and online comments will be accepted until May 16.  Fredericksburg Free Press
