- ➤ Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center announced a $37M emergency services upgrade, including a new standalone ER starting early next year. - ➤ Today the Visitor Center opens a photo exhibition honoring local seniors for Older Americans Month. The exhibit, created by Healthy Generations Area Agency on Aging, is free and will run throughout May at 601 Caroline Street. Fredericksburg Free Press
- ➤ The Virginia Star Quilters’ Guild invites quilters to submit 36-by-36-inch designs for an outdoor exhibition celebrating America the Beautiful in downtown Fredericksburg. Submissions are due May 22 and the display opens in July. Potomac Local News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Stafford County school board approved a final ($525.9 million) budget for fiscal 2027, allocating $10.6 million for opening Falls Run and Crow’s Nest elementary schools and Hartwood High along with $16.2 million for staff pay that boosts starting teacher salaries to $54,000. - ➤ UMW has introduced a new part-time and mostly online Master of Science in Nursing program designed to ease the local workforce shortage. Students follow a cohort model and can choose tracks in Family Nurse Practitioner or Nursing Education—finishing in about three years with required clinicals in partnership with regional healthcare providers. - ➤ UMW junior J.D. Nett won the Eagle Egg Pitch Competition and earned $10,000 for his LAX Gear Dryer startup during a Shark Tank style contest that brought student teams together. The Free Lance–Star

- ➤ State regulators will review Dominion’s load forecasting methods after Gov. Spanberger signed House Bill 892 to ensure accurate grid planning for high-load data center connections in the DOM Zone.
