CULTURE NEWS

  • Confederate General Stonewall Jackson was wounded by his own men during the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2nd, 1863—his left arm was amputated and he died eight days later in Caroline County.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • UMW held its annual Devil-Goat Day on April 24th, turning 99 by pitting students in red against those in green in a friendly campus competition. Over 1,400 students participated—playing lawn games, enjoying fair foods, and cheering on a tug-of-war contest as officials look ahead to the event’s 100th anniversary next year.  University of Mary Washington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tonya Lacey, the first Black woman to serve as Fredericksburg Clerk of Council, is retiring after 33 years with the city—her retirement takes effect in September. The city is now accepting applications for her replacement.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • City crews removed over 15 tons of debris from the drained canal in Fredericksburg and repaired its aeration system—cleanup will continue through Wednesday before pumps refill the canal in three to five days while officials investigate the cause.  Potomac Local News

  • UMW sprinter Yasmin Deane, a James Monroe High School graduate, has returned to track after battling severe ulcerative colitis until new Remicade infusion therapy and supportive coaching helped her recover. She now aims to excel at upcoming conference championships — holding national rankings of 16th in the 100 and 20th in the 200 — as she works to secure a spot at nationals.  Fredericksburg Free Press
