  • Letter carriers and food bank volunteers collected over eight tons of food yesterday during the Stamp Out Hunger drive — the donations will be sorted and delivered to community pantries serving 37 families of four in the region.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Local artist Donya Twyman delivered 60 handmade cards to Mary Washington Hospital on May 7 to honor mothers who were hospitalized on Mother’s Day, turning her art therapy into a gesture of healing (she crafted the cards after grieving her late mother).  Fredericksburg Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Mary Washington’s commencement today, three outstanding faculty members were honored (Jennifer Walker earned the Faculty Leadership Award, Stephen P. Hanna received the Anderson Distinguished Professor Award, and Christopher Willis was recognized with the Mary W. Pinschmidt Award) for their leadership in teaching.  University of Mary Washington
  • UMW graduates celebrated a long-awaited milestone today as they crossed Ball Circle — joyful tears and smiles marking the close of studies and the start of new adventures.  The Free Lance–Star
  • Eight University of Mary Washington graduates earned the Colgate W. Darden Jr. Award for Academic Achievement by finishing their degrees with a perfect 4.0 GPA during spring commencement, setting a record for the award’s most recipients while preparing for diverse future paths.  University of Mary Washington

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spotsylvania-based Leashes of Valor matches rescue dogs with veterans to ease PTSD and anxiety. At a Saturday fundraiser, Jason Haag and Chris Bowers said one leash saves two lives (training costs over $25,000) and donations and fosters help offer dogs free to veterans.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Fifty-five units of blood were donated on Friday at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church during the Ceili Leahy Blood Drive honoring her legacy; her parents (John and Leslie) led early donations to uphold the family’s long commitment to community service.  Fredericksburg Free Press
