CULTURE NEWS

  • Riverside Center for the Performing Arts presents To Kill a Mockingbird using the original stage adaptation until June 22. Veteran actor Tug Coker—a Stafford High School graduate—plays Atticus Finch with strong emotion and clear connection to his role.  Fredericksburg Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Mary Washington was ranked among the Peace Corps’ top 10 volunteer-producing small colleges for 2025 after five alumni serving in Albania/Montenegro, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Senegal and Timor-Leste underscored its strong record of global service—its Peace Corps Prep Program trains students for future volunteer roles.  University of Mary Washington
  • The University of Mary Washington will launch a free online one-credit Intro to AI course for current and incoming students this summer, and the eight-week self-paced course will teach students the basics of how AI works and how to use it responsibly—preparing them for future challenges. Professor Anand Rao, who designed the course, said that enrolled students will receive instructions via email and can earn credit after completing the course in the fall.  University of Mary Washington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Scaffolding will go up on Monday, May 19, around the Renwick Courthouse bell tower to begin four months of repairs that will match historic mortar, brick, and stucco—work that includes structural framing repairs, repointing, window reglazing, and thorough cleaning. WxTite, LLC from Greensboro was chosen to perform the repairs and will protect the Revere bell while closing the east side sidewalk and parking near Princess Anne.  City of Fredericksburg

HEALTH NEWS

  • A raccoon near the 7000 block of Stubbs Bridge Road by Lake Anna tested positive for rabies on Friday, as confirmed by the Rappahannock Area Health District. The district urged anyone who contacted the animal to seek medical care and told pet owners to consult a veterinarian.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Health officials confirmed a raccoon near the 7000 block of Stubbs Bridge Road in Spotsylvania County tested positive for rabies, so anyone who was in contact should seek medical care right away. Pet owners are urged to vaccinate their animals—if exposure is a concern, call the Spotsylvania County Health Department at 540-507-7386—to stay safe.  Potomac Local News
