- ➤ Volunteers at Rappahannock Education Farm mulched the tomato field — thinned the beets as the farm harvested 882 pounds of vegetables donated to reduce hunger and provide healthy food in the region. Fredericksburg Free Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The NSWCDD competition drew more than 150 students from local middle and high schools to the Fredericksburg Convention Center where they built LEGO robots to complete timed tasks such as navigating obstacles — high-school teams also wrote code for robots to pick up supply barrels and take photos. Winners in robotics, cybersecurity, and additive manufacturing were named after the event led by Navy scientists. The Free Lance–Star
- ➤ Fredericksburg-area students Kelsey Payne and Austin Moore joined five other UMW graduates who finished on May 10 with perfect 4.0 GPAs and summa cum laude honors—earning the Colgate W. Darden Jr. Award for Academic Achievement. Payne earned degrees in music and computer science while Moore completed a double major in mathematics and applied physics and plans to start his career soon. The Free Lance–Star

- ➤ Fredericksburg Regional Transit will realign bus routes and switch to a number-only naming system for Spotsylvania County buses on May 19, 2025. The changes, based on community feedback, aim to shorten travel times and improve service connections — updated maps and schedules will soon be available at Central Station and online. - ➤ Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg has installed a new Distributed Antenna System costing $268,000 to boost emergency radio signals throughout the building. - ➤ Nearly a year after a spinal injury in a lacrosse playoff game, 17-year-old Gunnar Burns has focused on therapy and school work at home with help from his family—he said he remains the same person despite losing some mobility and now plans a gap year before studying IT in college.
