GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Highway work zones on Virginia interstates and major roads will be suspended and lane closures lifted from noon on May 23 until noon on May 27, easing travel issues. Drivers in Fredericksburg should follow posted detour signs (and watch for flaggers) to navigate the changing routes. Fredericksburg Free Press
- ➤ The ramps to access I-95 southbound at Exit 118 near Route 606 in Spotsylvania were closed Monday night from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Tuesday for paving while the northbound ramps remained open. Motorists in Thornburg faced brief delays at the Route 1 intersection from 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday—flagging crews and law enforcement directed traffic during the road work. - ➤ The City of Fredericksburg announced plans for the Dixon Park Connector — a multimodal project that will link trails including the future Bankside Trail and the Virginia Central Railway Trail — and add a new on-street bike lane along Caroline Street to Dixon Park. - ➤ Fredericksburg Area Health and Support Services laid off six employees and reduced its workforce by 25% on May 9 after its federal Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program grant was cut from $1.7 million to $850,000. Executive Director Joseph Lyttle is working with regional partners to prevent clients from falling through the cracks — a challenge that is increasing caseloads for remaining staff.
