COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Caroline’s Promise is partnering with the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank to deliver 10 breakfasts & 10 lunches every 10 days from June 1 to Aug. 1; families who register by May 28 will receive their first meal box between June 1 and 3. The service replaces the previous drive-thru sites, & food pickup remains available at designated times.  Fredericksburg Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fredericksburg Area Museum opens the Living Legacies exhibit Friday from 5—9 p.m.—a project developed over three years by Dr. Gaila Sims that presents Black history in four parts. The event will feature free drink tickets, a live performance by Harry Henderson, and formal remarks honoring a local musician and activist.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • The remains of President Monroe’s eldest daughter were brought from an unmarked grave in Paris and delivered to the local area last week, with plans to reinter her at Hollywood Cemetery on October 23. The Bringing Eliza Home Project now seeks to raise $10,000—covering remaining costs and ensuring her proper final resting place.  The Free Lance–Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fredericksburg City Public Schools released a new elementary school zone map for the 2025-26 school year — students will be assigned to Hugh Mercer in the central area, Lafayette in the west, or Gladys West in the east — after reviewing 2023-24 enrollment data and community feedback.  Potomac Local News
  • Gov. Youngkin vetoed a bill that would allow two African-American history courses to count for graduation requirements—he said the change would distract from key lessons—and NAACP Loudoun Branch president Michelle Thomas will ask lawmakers to revisit the proposal in the next legislative session. Lawmakers had passed the measure with amendments, but the governor claimed students must learn a full history to understand today's society.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Corey Koch, the only marching band director in Massaponax history, is retiring after 27 years and will be replaced by assistant Kassie Phillips—he earned a lasting reputation for inclusion by guiding students like Eric Christian Wagner and helping rename the band room in his honor. Koch will continue full-time at KBI Music Shoppe and is eager for new experiences this fall.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Walker-Grant Middle School in Fredericksburg was one of 220 schools selected to receive a $5,000 grant from the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries—funds that will be used for new graphic novels, books in multiple languages, and updated essay collections to expand the library.  Potomac Local News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 19, 2025, FAMPO staff in Fredericksburg recommended two river crossing corridors, Options A + C, to ease congestion and improve north-south travel across the Rappahannock River. The recommendations follow three years of planning that included public input, environmental screening and traffic analysis.  Potomac Local News
  • Marine Corps Base Quantico began live-fire training drills today at 8 a.m. that will run until May 30 with exercises including fragmentation grenades and 5.56mm rounds. The base will resume louder drills from June 3 to June 6 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.—featuring 155mm howitzer, mortar systems, missiles and rotary-wing aircraft to support national security training.  Potomac Local News
