  • Stafford County native Ana Ojeda spent $41,000 of her life savings to build Avello Rescue on her 11-acre property where rescued dogs have room to recover and play—she also wrote and illustrated Panda’s Big Heart to help cover costs and will appear at an Aug. 10 event at Possum-bilities in downtown Fredericksburg.  The Free Lance–Star

  • Local news announced winners of free tickets for Next to Normal at Riverside Center — Samantha won 4 tickets while Molly and Dave each received 2 tickets — and winners have been emailed to choose any performance date through August 3.   • On July 8, at Riverside, CEO and Producing Artistic Director Patrick A'Hearn and Director Penny Ayn Maas talked about Next to Normal and mental health—explaining the musical's focus on personal struggles—while offering insights into its creative approach.  Fredericksburg Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Area school divisions continue hiring new teachers as the 2025–26 school year nears; Stafford County has over 120 open licensed roles—mainly classroom and special education positions—and Fredericksburg has 21.5 openings focused on elementary education. New hires will begin orientation on July 28 in Stafford and attend a four-day New Staff Academy in Fredericksburg before school starts in early August.  Potomac Local News
  • The Fredericksburg City School Board approved a policy that requires pre-approval for most travel and conference expenses to keep professional development costs within budget—some board members voiced strong concerns over restrictions on personal travel choices. Retention bonuses of $500 for full-time employees were also approved and will be paid on Aug. 28—reflecting the board's efforts to manage spending and reward staff.  Fredericksburg Free Press
