GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fredericksburg planning commissioners reviewed Phase II findings to revitalize eight aging shopping centers, including Greenbrier, and plan zoning changes for mixed-use development. • The State Board of Elections released the candidate list for the upcoming 2025 elections—71% of school board seats and 56% of supervisor races are unopposed—and local voters will head to the polls in nine weeks to elect state and local officials.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • A proposal to improve Routes 2/17 has been updated to combine two projects into one $70.6 million plan—one project will widen the road while the other will lengthen the turn at the Lansdowne Road intersection.  The Free Lance–Star
  • The public may review plans and comment on the proposed widening of Route 2/17 from near Dixon Park in Fredericksburg to Imboden Street in Spotsylvania—this project will add a shared-use path, improved pedestrian crossings, an upgraded bus stop, and intersection improvements during an open house on July 23 from 5-7 at Elks Lodge. VDOT will also begin replacing the bridge superstructure on Route 207 in Caroline County next week—with the northbound lane set to close late next month for about nine months, reducing the road to two travel lanes and lowering the speed limit.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Spotsylvania County will launch an automated speed camera program in six school zones on Aug. 12 when schools begin, with motorists receiving a 30-day warning before citations start on Sept. 11. The county—together with the school division and sheriff’s office—will reinvest fines from speeding violations into safety projects after studies showed dangerous speeds near Battlefield Middle School.  Fredericksburg Free Press
