- ➤ About 50 volunteers will work around Fredericksburg to count people experiencing homelessness starting Thursday at 6am—this census occurs every January and every other summer to update local data. Fredericksburg Free Press
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Stafford woman, 32, has been charged with second-degree murder after deputies responded at 12:40 p.m. Saturday to a shooting connected to a domestic dispute—she allegedly shot her ex-boyfriend and was detained in the parking lot at Giant at 550 Celebrate Virginia Parkway while officers discovered a 31-year-old man with fatal gunshot wounds at a home on Rocky Run Road. - ➤ UMW has begun construction on a new theatre facility for its Theatre and Dance Department as demolition of Brent House starts this month and Marshall and Russell Halls are set to follow. Marshall Hill roadway and nearby parking lots will be closed during the project (UMW is following city noise ordinances) (the university is using erosion control measures and coordinating additional traffic and clean-up efforts). - ➤ Germanna Community College has been awarded a $350,000 grant from the Lowe’s Foundation to build and deploy mobile training units—aimed at serving rural communities, public schools and correctional facilities—to help address the shortage of qualified construction workers. - ➤ On July 15, the SCC ruled Dominion’s IRP is legally sufficient—ordering the utility to use a 20-year planning timeline and include a pathway that meets the Virginia Clean Economy Act in its next filing—while critics say the ruling lacks the detail needed to address rising energy demand from data centers. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Civil rights groups including ACLU of Virginia, Protect Democracy and WilmerHale filed motions in a federal lawsuit arguing that Virginia’s law permanently disenfranchising people with felony convictions violates the 150-year-old Virginia Readmission Act. The plaintiffs seek class-action status for over 300,000 affected Virginians—whose right to vote has been limited since Gov. Glenn Youngkin changed application policies—with the trial scheduled for October 23. Fredericksburg Free Press
- ➤ The City of Fredericksburg will begin work on a pedestrian safety project in the Mayfield neighborhood near Dixon Park on Aug. 11, which will add ADA-compliant curb ramps, improved crosswalks, and modified intersections — funded by the Community Development Block Grant and the city’s Capital Improvement Plan.
