GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governors including Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin sent a letter to PJM after the capacity auction on July 22 showed record cost increases that may add about 5% to some consumers' power bills in 2026 and 2027. The governors asked for a public vote to fill two open board seats and met on July 23 in Pennsylvania + criticized PJM for its slow grid planning and rising transmission costs.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • U.S. Rep. Eugene Vindman + Sen. Tim Kaine introduced a bill today to restore the Charting My Path for Future Success program that helped over 1,600 high school juniors and seniors, including 91 in Spotsylvania. The legislation will direct the Department of Education to reissue the program's funding that was discontinued in February after more than $25 million was spent.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Eugene Loew—hired on March 10 at a salary of $175,011.20—is no longer employed as Stafford County’s Director of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism after four months on the job. He was removed on July 15 after he attempted to hire his fiancée for a department position.  Potomac Local News
  • Virginia launched the Blue Envelope Program on July 1 to help drivers with autism by providing a blue envelope at DMV customer service centers that holds a driver’s license, registration, and insurance along with printed instructions for law enforcement to ensure clear, calm communication during traffic stops—reducing misunderstandings and promoting safe interactions without requiring medical documentation.  Fredericksburg Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today is World Drowning Prevention Day and the Rappahannock Area Health District warns that residential pools are the top site for accidental drownings in children under 15, with nine children under five drowning in 2025 compared to fewer in previous years—homeowners are advised to add safety features like fences, self-closing gates, and drain covers while always watching children closely when near water.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • State officials warned that tens of thousands of Virginians could lose lower health insurance costs when enhanced premium tax credits expire in December because Congress did not renew the necessary language in the spending bill. Officials said steep premium increases may force many enrollees to drop coverage + free clinics are preparing for a surge in patients.  Fredericksburg Free Press
