- ➤ Caroline’s Promise Community of Promise Day is happening today from 10 a.m. to noon at Caroline High School, where 65 groups offer free school supplies and students get backpacks with support from volunteers—Operation Heroes will hold a supply drive on Aug. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Virginia Credit Union Stadium with giveaways and fun activities. - ➤ Fredericksburg will add speed cameras near Walker-Grant Middle School with a 30-day warning period from Aug. 18th through Sept. 19th—live ticketing and a $100 penalty will begin on Sept. 20th. The city has also lowered the speed limit on Gateway Boulevard from 35 mph to 25 mph between Route 3 and Idlewild Boulevard, with a further reduction to 15 mph when the school zone is active. - ➤ A letter signed by 450 women including Salem-area voter Mauricia Smith warned Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears that her vote on a contraception bill and her note opposing a constitutional amendment mean she cannot be trusted to protect reproductive rights in the upcoming elections. The letter has led the signers to back Abigail Spanberger over Earle-Sears+ they expect the issue to influence the governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general races this fall. - ➤ Virginia lawmakers are studying how expiring enhanced ACA tax credits might affect low-income Virginians later this year—up to 100,000 people could lose coverage if Congress does not renew them. Lawmakers may call a special session soon—analysis shows that higher premiums and insurer exits could force many to face increased costs. Fredericksburg Free Press
- ➤ The SPCA of Fredericksburg advises pet owners to walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening—when pavement is cooler—to prevent heatstroke and burns.
