COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A group of Fredericksburg volunteers, FXBG Fridge & Food Rescue, is starting community fridges and small pantries so neighbors can share food to help reduce waste and insecurity. They will work with the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank and meet on Monday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library to plan next steps—offering a simple way for everyone to pitch in.  The Free Lance–Star

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Developers are raising money for a $140 million travel-sports facility in Stafford County — it will have 100,000 to 150,000 square feet of indoor space and open by 2029 — while local news also notes Restaurant Week and the Agricultural Fair running until Aug. 3, Mary Washington Hospital ranked ninth in Virginia, and a $2.95 million home sale at 213 Caroline St. became one of the highest in town.  Fredericksburg Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • All Spotsylvania County Public School students will receive free breakfast and lunch for the 2025-26 school year as SCPS implements the Community Eligibility Provision — parents need not take any action.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Stafford County School Board will vote at 7:00 p.m. on August 26 on the new high school's name, mascot and colors, using public input from a poll (with Falls Run High School with Falcons and Hartwood High School with Stallions, both featuring black, gold and silver) open until August 25. The school is set to open in Fall 2026.  Potomac Local News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Recent events in Spain and Britain have shown that energy debates are hard to settle as Virginia faces rising power needs from new data centers and clean energy rules. A report ruled out solar power as the cause of Spain’s blackout—while Britain’s government said natural gas plants must stay online to support renewables.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Starting August 4, the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center will close for six to seven months and Chatham Manor will shut for about one year for safety and building upgrades—these upgrades include installing a fire suppression system and interior renovations. The park grounds will remain open for walking trails and outdoor exhibits—visitors can still enjoy the outdoors during the construction period.  Potomac Local News
  • Today, the Free Press outlined an agenda that will cover every contested board, city council and school board race until November 4 and will release questionnaires for statewide candidates and hold candidate forums in September—giving local voters clear insight ahead of the upcoming election. The Spotsylvania County School Board will meet Monday at 5:30 p.m. to review three policies, including one for appointing a student representative.  Fredericksburg Free Press
