COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday in Lafayette Square, Juanita Shanks of FailSafe-ERA led a Sounding the Alarm event to call on the community to act against youth violence sparked by April shootings that killed three young men—her call now fuels a regional effort to address the issue.  Fredericksburg Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Spotsylvania Commonwealth’s Attorney said hate crime charges remain on the table after investigators reviewed the July 20 Partlow Road incident in which two Black women were chased until they wrecked their vehicle — community and faith leaders met Saturday at Mount Zion Baptist Church and plan to urge additional charges while new misdemeanor court dates are set for November 20.  Fredericksburg Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fredericksburg opened its new Walker–Grant Middle School in Idlewild where neighbors and students toured a modern 162,000‑square‑foot facility during a community preview on Saturday morning—teachers and officials celebrated the school’s design and community value. Kindergartners and students in grades 6 and 9 will mark Transition Day on Monday, Aug. 18 before all other students start on Tuesday, Aug. 19.  The Free Lance–Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Stafford County resident Darius Mayfield announced his run for the GOP nomination in Virginia’s 7th District, which covers Fredericksburg, after settling in Embrey Mill in January. The 39-year-old, who previously ran in New Jersey, said he will support small businesses and simplify bills—he aims to unite voters—while competing with at least two other candidates.  Fredericksburg Free Press
