ECONOMY NEWS

  • The George Washington Regional Commission—headed by Economic Development Program Director Sarah Oldacre—has launched an online survey open until September 15 that asks local residents, business owners, and others in Planning District 16 for input on a new economic development plan. The survey will guide a report that outlines regional strengths and weaknesses and help local communities boost their chance for federal funding.  Potomac Local News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UMW will launch its new Center for AI and the Liberal Arts at the Hurley Convergence Center this fall to support interdisciplinary research, teaching and public engagement on artificial intelligence. Led by Professor Anand Rao, the center will offer courses — including a summer course and an in-depth fall class — that equip students with hands-on projects and ethical training for an AI-driven future.  University of Mary Washington
  • PWCS students earned top awards at the Virginia Junior Academy of Science Research Symposium, with Forest Park High students winning first place in Physics and Astronomy and Rania Lateef from Colgan High taking first in Psychology and statewide honors.   • Fredericksburg City raised the salary of an elementary assistant principal after his father—School Board member Jarvis Bailey—texted division superintendent Marci Catlett with his son Matthew Bailey’s reasons for a higher pay step. The change was made based on the text messages outlining his request for increased placement on the salary scale.  Potomac Local News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fredericksburg City Council approved its updated Comprehensive Plan on June 24 — named Fredericksburg Forward — to guide a 20-year strategy for city growth and historic preservation after 18 months of community input.  Potomac Local News
  • Spotsylvania County voters face 14 candidates running in three board of supervisors and three school board races along with statewide contests for governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general this fall—early in-person voting starts Sept. 19, mailed ballots must be requested by Oct. 24, and Election Day is Nov. 4.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Virginia Railway Express expects to welcome its 100 millionth rider this fall—and leaders say the milestone may boost ridership as the agency plans Saturday trains and long-term funding. The agency will announce its service expansion and financing measures soon.  Potomac Local News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Fredericksburg’s median home price reached a record $490,000 in July—a 3% increase from last year—even as homes took 28 days on average to sell. Inventory rose 34% while total sales volume jumped 11%, and local agents predict a strong fall and winter market.  Potomac Local News
