COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local pools across the region are cutting back hours as summer winds down—many are shifting to weekends-only schedules through Labor Day. In Fredericksburg, the Doris E. Buffett Pool will switch to weekends-only service on August 18 with its final swim day on September 1.  Potomac Local News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Data from FAAR shows the regional median home price hit a record $490K in July with 543 sales and homes taking an average of 28 days on the market—up 3 percent from last year. Boot Barn will open a store at Central Park in October, the Burger King at Plank Road has closed and is available for lease, and a proposal for 60 apartments near Celebrate Virginia Parkway in Stafford is underway.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Centennial Broadcasting, led by CEO Allen Shaw, announced it will acquire Fredericksburg radio stations WGRQ-FM and WGRX-FM from Telemedia Broadcasting and owner Carl Hurlebaus as part of its expanding station cluster—pending FCC approval, the deal is expected to close later this year.  Fredericksburg Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Stafford County authorities are still searching for 21-year-old Gabriela Alejandra Bonilla Flores after her white Audi Q5 was seized as evidence in the August 5th hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian on Richmond Highway—two residents, Carlos Guevara and Maritza Bonilla Zapata, were arrested for aiding her evasion.  Potomac Local News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Historic Fredericksburg Foundation will honor WWII’s 80th anniversary this weekend by hosting a USO Dance on Friday evening and a free open house and blood drive on Saturday at the Dorothy Hart Center — a former USO building.  Fredericksburg Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Stafford County Public Schools reported that its bus system ran smoothly on Tuesday, August 12 with only minor delays, such as six runs arriving about 30 minutes late and one elementary bus delayed before returning on time. New leadership and operational improvements—like full staffing and revised routes—helped avoid the nearly 3,000 missed rides seen last year.  Potomac Local News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Candidate Susanna Finn said the Ward 3 race is unfair after the local party endorsed Matt Kelly—and she urged him to drop out, while Kelly said he was not part of the endorsement decision and will stay in the contest. This dispute highlights a deeper conflict over party influence in city council races.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • At Tuesday’s meeting, Spotsylvania supervisors adopted a resolution condemning racism after residents recounted several incidents, including an encounter on Partlow Road where two Black motorists were harassed by white drivers—sparking calls for further discussion and actions. Community members stressed that such racial hostility has harmed the county and urged leaders to take stronger steps to protect all residents.  Fredericksburg Free Press
