CRIME NEWS

  • A jury convicted Karriem Jackson of two counts of first-degree murder for a 2020 Dale City house party shooting and he will face sentencing on December 5—while police in Stafford, Prince William and Fredericksburg arrested suspects on charges including domestic violence, fraud and indecent exposure.  Potomac Local News
  • A Woodbridge woman wanted in Prince William assaulted a deputy in Spotsylvania as schoolchildren watched and was arrested last week—police said she faces charges.  The Free Lance–Star

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In 2024, Dominion Energy cut power to 339,000 Virginia homes and Appalachian Power stopped service for 43,000 households due to nonpayment. Data centers like Amazon and Microsoft are pushing up electricity use and rates—raising energy costs that will hurt households over the next 15 years.  Fredericksburg Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Fredericksburg recently hired Todd Flippen as assistant city manager for utilities and capital projects, and he will oversee the wastewater treatment plant expansion, construction of a new fire station, and other water, wastewater and stormwater projects outlined in the Capital Improvement Plan. This restructuring supports a $250 million infrastructure effort over the next decade — his extensive local government background is expected to boost service delivery and resilience.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • The City is updating its Chesapeake Bay Preservation Overlay District regulations—designed to reflect state water quality standards—and invites public input at a meeting on Monday, August 25 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the Visitor Center meeting room located at 601 Caroline Street.  City of Fredericksburg

HEALTH NEWS

  • A forum at Salem Fields Community Church in Spotsylvania County focused on how fentanyl can quickly harm a person and trained locals to use Narcan—Jennifer Bateman showed how the life-saving drug was used after a man overdosed by mistaking fentanyl for oxycodone while panelists, including Attorney General Jason Miyares, discussed steps to lower opioid deaths.  Fredericksburg Free Press

  • Local women on the Fredericksburg Roller Derby team play full-contact flat-track bouts at the Field House at Dixon Park and at the nearby convention center as part of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association—volunteers who also support local fundraisers.  Potomac Local News
