CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Cameron M. Littleford, a 26-year-old man from Portsmouth, pleaded guilty in Spotsylvania Circuit Court—receiving a 16-year sentence for his role in a shooting that injured a woman. The Free Lance–Star
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Riverside Center for the Performing Arts is two weeks into its run of The Sound of Music with over 6,000 tickets sold and eight weeks remaining—sales are tracking similarly to last year's Jersey Boys run that drew more than 11,000 tickets; the show will run through October 26. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Parents gathered at a Fredericksburg School Board meeting on Wednesday night to report school buses running late, confusing routes and unsafe stops. Transportation officials said they will hire more drivers, borrow buses and adjust school start times — promising daily updates as fixes roll out. Potomac Local News
- ➤ The University of Mary Washington finished its most successful fundraising year on June 30 by raising $37.8 million in gifts and pledges that supported students, programs and scholarships; the record total pushed its endowment above $100 million thanks to contributions from alumni, parents, and staff. - ➤ UMW is preparing for the new academic year with new majors and minors and a reorganization that creates the School of Science and the School of the Arts and moves several departments to foster interdisciplinary study—these changes include a new Research and Creativity Collaborative and a Center for AI led by Anand Rao. The university is also refreshing campus facilities with upgraded dining options, new leadership for health and wellness, and improvements to athletic facilities to better support students. - ➤ VDOT is installing a traffic light at the crossing of Tidewater Trail and Glendas Way after four pedestrians died, with warning lights set to flash on Sept. 2 and the full signal coming on later this week—County officials say a later project will add a median and safer crossing paths for walkers. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Spotsylvania VA outpatient clinic marked its sixth month of service this month after opening in March, serving over 50,000 veterans and recruiting 408 healthcare professionals. The 426,722-square-foot facility on 60 acres off Hood Drive will enroll 30,000 to 35,000 veterans and add more than 1,000 workers + it will expand services with additional specialties in the coming months.
