- ➤ Stafford County officials declared August 31 Overdose Awareness Day to help reduce stigma and honor those lost to overdose. Community events include a 2-year celebration at Mill Street Draft Garden, bilingual storytime and a kayak adventure at Motts Run Reservoir, free Dumpster Days in Prince William, a town hall on redevelopment plans in Manassas on September 15, and a guided walking tour of Government Island’s historic quarry on September 6—where participants learn about Aquia sandstone used in the White House and Capitol. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Fredericksburg Youth Academy will begin a 10 week policing program on September 15 for young adults aged 14 to 20 that runs Mondays through November 17—providing hands on law enforcement experience. Fredericksburg Free Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fredericksburg City Council formed a committee to plan the 300th anniversary celebration in 2028, and the group will meet next month to propose up to 10 events. The committee (including local leaders like Nancy Moore and Scott Cole) will develop a budget and schedule that honors the city's long history. The Free Lance–Star
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The UMW Eagles in Recovery Program has been awarded a $104,227 grant from the Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority to expand support for students in recovery—this funding, renewable annually over the next four years, will cover program services, staffing and training at UMW.
