COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Retired Marine Tai Mamea from Spotsylvania was honored at the Pentagon with the 2025 Spirit of Hope Award for his volunteer work supporting veterans—he was nominated by the U.S. Marine Corps for mentoring young service members and aiding military families in need.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Fredericksburg residents face a busy weekend with the Italian Heritage celebration at Market Square on Saturday featuring pizza and live music—along with the 2nd Annual Day of Play on Sunday that offers crafts and games—while Oktoberfest kicks off today at Alpine Chef and a transportation job fair offering paid training is set for October 2 at Walker-Grant Center.  Potomac Local News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A 2024 report shows Fredericksburg visitor spending grew by 12.9% to $170.8 million—Spotsylvania led the region with $245.9 million—and reflected record tourism levels statewide. Local tourism boosted jobs and tax revenue—driving economic strength as more visitors returned than before.  The Free Lance–Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UMW is hosting free open houses this fall on Sept. 27, Oct. 18 and Nov. 8 — where future students and their families can tour the campus, talk with teachers, and learn about classes and student life. Seniors who already applied can register for an admission review during the tours that also cover financial aid and key details.  University of Mary Washington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Stafford voters will choose their House of Delegates representatives this fall while candidates from the 23rd, 64th and 65th Districts discussed local control over data center growth — an issue affecting water, land and energy. Early voting runs from today until Nov. 1 at the Registrar’s Office with Election Day on Nov. 4.  Potomac Local News
  • Virginia’s in-person early voting begins today and will run until Nov. 1—voters must cast ballots in their registered local jurisdiction for governor, attorney general, and other offices. New rules shorten the registration deadline to Oct. 24 and require updated reporting for provisional ballots.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Two experienced prosecutors are running to be Fredericksburg’s Commonwealth’s Attorney this November—incumbent Libby Humphries, who has served since 2018, faces challenger Travis Bird, who brings experience from Spotsylvania with alternative dockets.   • The City was awarded a $33,280 grant from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to survey and draft a National Register nomination for the original section of the Mayfield neighborhood north of Howison Street. A DHR consultant will lead the architectural survey while the City stays engaged to keep residents informed—ensuring that the process preserves homeowner freedoms and opens up future tax incentives and grant opportunities.  City of Fredericksburg
