CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Stafford Middle School unveiled a new mural painted by local artist Brenda Edwards on Wednesday—honoring Walker’s Inn as a vibrant hub of music, sports and community life for the African American community. The project was led in partnership with Discover Stafford: Museum and Historical Society and the Stafford Education Foundation to help students learn about local history. Fredericksburg Free Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Germanna Community College has chosen three finalists from 80 applicants for its next president after Dr. Van Wilson's interim term. The finalists—Dr. David Ferreira, Dr. Tashika Griffith, and Dr. Thomas Walker, Jr.—will visit campus this fall at the Fredericksburg Area Campus for public forums and community meet-and-greets. - ➤ The Ward 3 city school board seat is open after Jennifer Boyd stepped down after nine years—candidates Langdon and Stelmok are competing for the position. The Free Lance–Star
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Councilwoman Susanna Finn and former Councilman Matt Kelly are competing for the Ward 3 council seat after Finn was appointed in February to complete an unexpired term. Finn faces Kelly, who served from 2002 to 2023—voters will decide the new representative in the upcoming election. The Free Lance–Star
- ➤ Attorney General Jason Miyares announced today that his office and the FTC, along with 18 states, have shut down a deceptive charity fundraising scheme that falsely claimed vehicle donations would fund breast cancer screenings—this move restricts future fundraising and secures $550,000 for cancer charities. - ➤ Governor Glenn Youngkin announced a fall rebate that will give Virginia taxpayers up to $400 back, with the funds expected to appear in bank accounts soon.
