COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Christy Maupin from Westmoreland County has been named Chair of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library Board, replacing David Ross—Dr. Janet Brown-Page from Stafford County will serve as Vice Chair.  Potomac Local News
  • Spotsylvania Schools is hosting the Rock Out, Knock Out Homelessness drive—today from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.—at Southpoint Walmart to collect essential donations for Treasure House—located at Massaponax High School and serving families in need.  Fredericksburg Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Potomac Local News is giving away two tickets to see the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra at Riverside Center on October 12; one winner will be notified by email. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. —tickets cost $55 online and appetizers and drinks are available—offering a chance to enjoy classic swing music.  Potomac Local News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Stafford County Public Schools announced that Michael Sidebotham—principal of Grafton Elementary—was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to the National Assessment Governing Board that oversees the Nation's Report Card. He will use his test data expertise to help set national standards for student learning.  Potomac Local News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia officials said that most state employees were not affected by the shutdown, although positions funded partly by federal grants may see disruptions if the shutdown persists — employees in those roles will be contacted soon and services like SNAP, WIC, and Medicaid will remain uninterrupted.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • The October edition of Cityscape has been released, reporting that Scarecrow Fest is set for this month — the City completed its Smart Water Meter upgrades and early voting for the November 4 election began on September 19.
