  • FRA President Curry Roberts talked about his career and said he will retire from the alliance in April during an interview with local reporter Bill Freehling — his discussion on the Biz Beat Banter podcast highlighted his long service — and he plans a smooth transition.  Fredericksburg Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wildlife Rescue League opened its first center on October 7 in Fredericksburg to care for injured wildlife.  The Free Lance–Star
  • The Virginia Department of Forestry is asking residents to collect and label native acorns in paper bags by October 15 to help grow climate-resilient forests—this donation will support rare trees like black oak, white oak, chestnut oak and black walnut.  Fredericksburg Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Transit officials said a recent shutdown dropped ridership and that Virginia Railway Express riders will face higher ticket prices next year—local taxpayers may be asked to help fund regional transit.  Potomac Local News
  • Virginia's bipartisan Joint Commission met Monday to review plans that would let retail cannabis sales start if lawmakers pass a new bill after Governor Youngkin's vetoes—commissioners examined medical safeguards, illicit market issues and labeling problems. They will propose retail rules for the 2026 session with more data and market comparisons from nearby states.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • This week, road work in the Fredericksburg area is planned with lane closures on I-95 and local streets for routine bridge inspections and road improvements. Motorists are advised to plan ahead for delays—using alternate routes and obeying flaggers as work continues from Sunday to Friday.  Fredericksburg Free Press
