COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials will dedicate a new memorial honoring Spotsylvania students on Saturday at 2 p.m. in front of the School Board building at River Run (across from Massaponax High School). The donation-funded park features ten benches (no taxpayer funds were used) to help families remember their loved ones.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Allen and Allen is accepting nominations for its Hometown Hero program until Friday at midnight—nominees should be everyday people who make a positive difference in their communities.  Fredericksburg Free Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In September, local housing prices fell to a median of $462,500 as inventory grew to 1,333 listings and 60 homes sold—including a $1.25 million sale near the University of Mary Washington—while recent business news shows Boot Barn opening at Central Park and plans for a downtown Kilwins ice cream shop were revealed. EDUCATION NEWS

  • City officials announced a state grant was given to city schools to study a possible rehabilitation of the historic Walker-Grant School built in 1935 to honor its legacy of learning.  The Free Lance–Star
  • The University of Mary Washington has named its new School of Science after 1959 alumna Irene Piscopo Rodgers, honoring her record donations that exceeded $45 million. Housed in the Jepson Science Center, the school brings together biological sciences, chemistry and physics, and earth and environmental sciences — providing a shared space for undergraduate research and innovation.  University of Mary Washington
  • The University of Mary Washington will host two open house events this fall—one on October 18 featuring its Honors Program and another on November 8 showcasing STEM and STEAM opportunities for prospective students.  Potomac Local News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mary Washington Healthcare and the University of Mary Washington officials discussed a plan for a new medical school—set to be the first in Northern Virginia—that will train community physicians to ease a severe local shortage of doctors. A favorable feasibility study and plans for state funding, curriculum building, and faculty hiring will guide the project over the next 12 to 18 months.  Fredericksburg Free Press
