COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today at Strangeways Brewing the Josh Hardy Superhero Celebration honors the late Josh Hardy and raises funds for the Fairy Godmother Project + a suggested $25 donation will support families affected by pediatric cancer.  Fredericksburg Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Larry DiBella — a first sergeant with the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office— and Amanda Monroe, a realtor and former substitute teacher, are running for the Berkeley District seat to replace outgoing board member April Gillespie. DiBella said the community needs a calm and safe school board while early voting is underway with Election Day set for Nov. 4.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • UMW’s new Center for AI and the Liberal Arts will host a public lecture on Oct.29 at 7 p.m. in the Chandler Ballroom at the Cedric Rucker University Center—educator Alan Coverstone will discuss how AI reshapes education and the need for diverse human skills, with a reception to follow.  University of Mary Washington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • VDOT announced that bridge washing along I-95 will cause alternating lane closures between Exit 110 and Exit 118 at the Matta River bridge—work scheduled Sunday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.—and additional closures will occur on the I-95 bridges over the Rappahannock River between Exit 130 and Exit 133 in both local and through lanes.  Potomac Local News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Governor Glenn Youngkin and State Senator Tara Durant from district 27—joining local officials—broke ground yesterday on a $12 million Crisis Receiving Center that will offer 24-hour behavioral health stabilization and care for residents in the Fredericksburg region. Officials said the facility is expected to ease the mental health burden and provide ongoing support to individuals in crisis.  Potomac Local News
  • A new crisis receiving center for psychiatric emergencies will open in Massaponax in spring—spurred by a father who lost his child to suicide—and it is expected to save lives by offering critical help in times of need.  The Free Lance–Star

SPORTS NEWS

  • UMW Athletics held a groundbreaking ceremony on October 23rd for a new multimillion-dollar modular locker room facility at the Battleground Athletic Complex that will serve nearly half of its student-athletes in sports such as field hockey, soccer, baseball, softball and lacrosse. The modular units have finished construction and will move onto campus in April with locker installation running from May to July so the facility will be ready in August.  University of Mary Washington
