  • Fredericksburg’s Micah Ecumenical Ministries (one of three global finalists) received $100,000 for its work during the Opus Prize ceremony held Thursday night at Xavier University of Louisiana. A Zambia-based ministry won the $1 million prize as the event honored faith-filled change and social innovation.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • The Barking Barley will open December 10 at 1515 Olde William Street in Fredericksburg as a space for dog lovers that honors the memory of Riley (whose image appears in the logo). The owner spent years planning and constructing the venue as his gift to downtown and a tribute to local community spirit (highlighting his long commitment to the area).  Potomac Local News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spotsylvania County Museum is featured in the new Virginia 250 Passport initiative—a free 64-page booklet available at museums and welcome centers that lets visitors collect stamps for discounts and prize entries. The program will run until Dec. 31, 2026 and is supported by local educators and government agencies.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Riverside Center for the Performing Arts in Fredericksburg will run Irving Berlin’s White Christmas through December 28, offering festive music, dance, and holiday cheer for the season. The show features standout performances (by Kathy Halenda, Sarah Mae Andersen, and Jordan Thomas Burnett) that promise a warm, memorable experience.  Potomac Local News

  • American Farmland Trust launched the Planning for Agriculture in Virginia Toolkit to offer easy-to-use resources for farmers including right-to-farm protections, farm-to-school initiatives and market based solutions—this digital guide provides fact sheets, videos and case studies to help local leaders support farms. The toolkit is designed to keep updated information available to foster economic growth in agricultural communities.  Fredericksburg Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Mary Washington’s Great Lives lecture series returns on January 20th, 2026 with a new season of free lectures on influential figures—program director Scott Harris said talks by historians, authors and scholars will be held nearly every Tuesday and Thursday at Dodd Auditorium throughout the spring semester.  Fredericksburg Free Press

  • Dr. Lorita 'Rita' Daniels, a Spotsylvania County School Board member, announced her Senate campaign on Veterans Day to focus on better veteran care and transparent use of taxpayer funds—she will launch a statewide listening tour to shape her policy platform.  Potomac Local News
