  • Kennedy Fewell, known as Miss Volunteer Virginia, visited Fredericksburg on Friday to show how donating time and funds support the Salvation Army’s local holiday programs and stressed that real change begins in our community.  Fredericksburg Free Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Historic Fredericksburg Foundation’s 55th Christmas Candlelight Tour returns this weekend with a colonial focus on 18th-century homes and early holiday life — a Saturday night program at the Smithfield mansion at the Fredericksburg Country Club offers colonial-themed history and seasonal celebration.  Fredericksburg Free Press
  • Washington Heritage Museums will see Executive Director Anne Darron retire in May after 12 years of service that strengthened community ties and finances. Darron said she is stepping down to focus on family and her next chapter (per the press release).  Potomac Local News
  • ARTfactory will host its 22nd Annual Off the Wall High School Art Exhibit and Competition starting Dec. 18 at a local gallery; the free event will run through Jan. 25 and include a live awards ceremony on Jan. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. to honor top student winners.  Potomac Local News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Fredericksburg leaders and Prince William County officials are starting new programs to help small businesses and entrepreneurs grow, offering chances for networking, education + teamwork. The initiatives will boost local economic growth and support our community.  Potomac Local News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Germanna Community College held its fall commencement on Thursday evening at the Anderson Center, awarding 1,042 degrees, certificates, and credentials to more than 900 graduates. Student speaker LaRai Diamond-Fortune, who earned an Associate of Applied Science in criminal justice, encouraged her peers to embrace lifelong learning.  Potomac Local News
  • Brandon Albon will start his role as Chief Academic Officer on Monday with the school system & he previously served as the assistant superintendent at the Virginia Department of Education.  The Free Lance–Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • VDOT has forecast light snow showers starting late Saturday night in Fredericksburg and early Sunday in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula — crews will pre-treat I-95 for safer travel as gusting winds of 25 to 35 mph may knock down trees; drivers are advised to check 511Virginia for road conditions.  Potomac Local News
  • VDOT announced overnight lane closures on Route 1 at Falmouth Bridge from Sunday to Thursday, 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. for repairs — Route 644 in Stafford County closes Dec. 17-22 for tree removal and Chatham Bridge has a sidewalk closure Tuesday from 9 a.m.-noon.  Potomac Local News
  • Stafford residents and school board members raised concerns Tuesday night about Dominion Energy's planned North Anna-Kraken Loop project — a 70-mile, 500-kV power line passing near schools. Officials have asked to bury the line to minimize health risks amid rising power demand.  Fredericksburg Free Press

  • North Stafford High School’s Wolverines, led by coach Marquez Hall, will face Oscar Smith in the Class 6 state championship game at James Madison University's Bridgeforth Stadium today at 11:30 a.m. They aim to secure Stafford County’s first football state title (their first championship game since 2004) using disciplined play.  Fredericksburg Free Press
